Kiger
Nike launched its modern trail running series through the winter of 2013 and 2014 with two high-performance shoes. One was the Nike Kiger – a lightweight, low-profile silhouette built for fast-paced agility across mixed terrain at distances up to 50km. Since then, it has stuck to these principles, becoming the brand’s flagship rapid trail racer.
The Kiger’s upper focuses on comfort and security, incorporating breathable engineered mesh alongside minimal synthetic overlays. The balance of these elements has fluctuated between models, with the 1st and 10th relying on variations in weave density to create durability and the 5 and 8 deploying more extensive panelling. Containment is achieved through a gusseted tongue and subtle heel counter, with Flywire cables also bringing a secure fit to models 1 through 4. Later editions switched to a conventional lacing system, incorporating a sturdy eyelet structure to maintain excellent lockdown. The padding on the tongue, collar and heel balances comfort, weight and fit, and a convenient heel pull has been used since the Kiger 5. Lastly, each iteration features a soft inner lining for incredible comfort, even without socks.
The Kiger’s low-profile sole has remained relatively consistent, as has its short heel-to-toe drop, resulting in reliable levels of stability, control and ground feel. Phylon foam and dual Zoom Air units produced a responsive, well-cushioned underfoot feel on the early iterations, before lightweight React foam made Kigers 5 through 9 more lightweight and energy returning. Meanwhile, the Nike Kiger 10 provides comprehensive support and comfort via full-length Cushlon 3.0 foam without any Zoom Air. A rock plate has been present since the 5th edition, protecting the forefoot from impacts and allowing confident movement over technical terrain. Incremental improvements in the outsole have increased durability and grip, as has the pairing of soft, sticky rubber and high-abrasion compounds and the changing design of its tread pattern. The Kiger 10’s Vibram Megagrip outsole is the pinnacle of the series, with strategically placed angular lugs delivering outstanding protection and traction while dropping overall weight.
The Nike Kiger is built for speed and lightweight support, but its sleek, low-profile design and minimalist upper gives it a stylish aesthetic, with bold touches coming from Swoosh and Trail logos, eye-catching text and reflective details. In 2019, it was reimagined in an eccentric collaboration with Virgil Abloh’s Off-White label for Nike’s “Athlete in Progress” collection. Outside fashion, it has been worn by elite athletes such as sub-ultra runner Bailey Kowalczyk, who describes it as “fast, precise and stable”, and French trail runner Baptiste Chassagne, who demonstrated its improving durability by taking second in 2024’s highly demanding UTMB race.
The Nike Kiger is a fast, secure and comfortable trail running shoe that can support athletes across all types of terrain, from flat tarmac roads, through rough gravel tracks to the steepest of rocky inclines. Its stable, grippy outsole and plush yet responsive midsole allow precise, controlled movement, making it a powerful piece of footwear, both for off-road training and competitive racing.
