Gel-Quantum 360

Since introducing Gel midsole technology in 1986, ASICS has evolved its distinctive cushioning material in various ways. At first, Gel inserts were hidden inside the sole, but by the early 2000s, the brand had begun revealing them on certain models, particularly those in the Gel-Kinsei line. A decade later, a bold project was launched to produce 360-degree visible Gel cushioning, resulting in the first silhouette in a new series: the ASICS Gel-Quantum 360.

Following a three-year design process, the Gel-Quantum 360 was released in 2015, signalling the start of a new era for Gel cushioning. It was hoped that the visible cushioning would bring a certain wow-factor to the 360, but the brand was also keen for it to perform well. Taking inspiration from human anatomy, they created a stable design with soft cushioning. This led to the addition of key components that have become staples of the 360 collection, including a stabilising Trusstic midfoot shank and visually striking yet incredibly comfortable blocks of Gel in the midsole. The original ASICS Gel-Quantum 360 was also built on the reliable last of the Gel-Nimbus – a popular ASICS running shoe – with plush foam filling the gaps around the Gel for a smooth transition through the foot. Meanwhile, a woven mesh upper with lightweight, flexible and breathable properties completed the design.

Over the years, these technologies have been refined, with recent editions adding innovations like FF Blast foam – a responsive, sustainably made running-shoe cushioning – and a multidirectional mesh upper that provides a snug, flexible fit. The Gel has also evolved, with 2022’s Quantum 360 VII introducing Scutoid Gel, its reorganised structure offering a sleek look and excellent shock absorption for long-lasting comfort. 2024’s Gel-Quantum 360 VIII then used cutting-edge Division Space technology for a softer, more lightweight feel.

While the series has changed aesthetically too, it has generally stuck to a sporty look. The stripped-back upper often features minimal overlays, with synthetic, no-sew elements and etched patterns rather than layered fabrics. On the ASICS Gel-Quantum 360 VIII, this took a techy turn as modern 5D printed details brought a dynamic complexity to the silhouette.

Since partnering with visionary Bulgarian fashion designer Kiko Kostadinov, ASICS has attracted several creative entities to collaborate on the Gel-Quantum 360. In 2022, Kiko launched three colourways of his reimagined 360 VII US3-S variant with striking tonal contrasts like the rich gold and green of the ‘Fir Green Demitasse’ edition. When the Quantum 360 VIII came out in 2024, it was reworked by Danish label Cecilie Bahnsen into a stylish slip-on with leather straps and flowery details, while other captivating sneakers were crafted with Italian sportswear brand C.P. Company and Montreal-based skateshop Dime.

The ASICS Gel-Quantum 360 has been around for many years, and while it has taken on a range of compelling styles and forms, it has always remained true to the original, combining stunning aesthetics with outstanding performance via a powerful 360-degree visible Gel midsole.
